As you suggested I uninstalled both the sound and modem drivers. I uninstalled the sigmatel HD Audio and deleted the driver, then rebooted the system. Unfortunately advice given for this situation is often misdirected. That’s exactly how I did it and worked for me I restarted the computer and everything was back to normal. I did exactly what you said and my audio returned as soon as I had deleted the modem driver.

This post has been flagged and will be reviewed by our staff. But that inspirin a lot of trouble to go through, just to change the default device from the modem – or some other obsoleted and redundant device – back to the device which should be handling sound on the machine.
No sound on Dell Inspiron m
Everything else is working fine except for the audio. Since it’s new, call Dell. I did this and rebooted and no fix. We’ll try anything short of buying a new laptop or motherboard.
Insplron is what I do by following the second step like you said: May 31, 4: Discussions cover Windows installation, driver problems, crashes, upgrading, service packs, and other Windows Vista-related questions. I then re-installed the audio and wah-laaaah- insspiron had sound. I now recall that after I finished the Vista “Upgrade Anytime” that it automatically re-installed the modem driver and this is when my audio stopped working. Then rebooted and, as you reported jflynn33,Vista reinstalled both drivers and the sound and modem work.

Sorry, there was a problem flagging this post. The first step, ALWAYS, is to check and make sure that the right sound device is selected as default in audio device setup.
No sound or audio in Inspiron Windows XP. In any case, things appear back to normal now. I followed your path by uninstalling the drivers.
May I buy you a drink MR Grif. The most common cause is the selection of the wrong – typically the modem – device as the default instead of the sound card. Also please exercise your best judgment when posting in the forums–revealing personal information such as your e-mail address, telephone number, and address is not recommended. Make sure that “Laptop Stereo Wound is selected. I booted from the CD and audio tested perfectly fine in the diagnostics environment.

Beyond installing the driver on the Dell site I went thru the process 2 times just to make surewhat next can we try to help resolve this?
So essentially, if you are troubleshooting Audio issues and all basic troubleshooting fails, try removing the Modem drivers and see if that helps! The system automatic downloaded the driver for sigmatel HD Audio. Great find – this worked for my Dell Dimension E The modem cannot play many of the files used for system sounds!
